Welcome! This is a giant guide that will teach you all about how to get Minecraft: Story Mode long after it's been removed from storefronts, made by the community, for the community. We often see people getting tricked by misinformation or clicking random links they find on Google (that's probably how you found us!), and that's why this website exists. We want to help stop misinformation, and for you to learn how to obtain the game free and safely.

Hello everyone,

Unfortunately, nothing built can last forever. So eventually, Minecraft: Story Mode was removed from all stores on July 25th, 2019.

This guide covers both legitimate and "unofficial" means of obtaining the game. The decision is entirely up to you, but it's generally recommended to take the "unofficial" path, as many platforms aren't feasibly obtainable anymore. However, if that's scary, don't worry! We'll also provide sources on how to purchase the game if you so wish.

Having a brain

This guide will require a good bit of reading comprehension, especially if you’re trying to install a more technical console mod or version of the game. Please make sure to read carefully and take in all relevant information. If you join our Discord and ask for everything to be spoonfed to you, you will be ignored. We try our best to make everything as simple as possible, but be ready to do your own research, problem solve, and use your critical thinking skills.

Basic internet and technical knowledge

Please have at least a basic understanding of how to use a computer and how a file system works. We’re not going to explain what a ZIP file is to you. We do our best to make sure everything included here is as simple to understand as possible, but the guides usually assume at minimum some fundamental understanding.

Protect yourself!

An ad-blocker is a good thing to have when going on certain sites. Ads are how websites make their money, and people are often blinded. Most sites nowadays bombard the user with ads to the point that the main content is overshadowed. They'll often appear as fake download buttons or links.

uBlock Origin is a free, open-source, up-to-date ad-blocker with over 10 million users. This is by far the best and only ad-blocker we'd recommend.

A VPN is also good to have, ESPECIALLY if you’re torrenting!

Surfshark is a great paid VPN that is still cheap.
Nord VPN is a luxury. It’s expensive but it’s by far the best.
Mullvad VPN is a great and simple, very privacy focused VPN. Prices range from cheap to fair, and they all give you the same features, just for a differing amount of time

A free VPN may seem enticing, but most don't respect user privacy or straight up don't work for our purposes. If you don't want to/can't pay for a VPN, that's okay! For most things it's not required. HOWEVER, if you choose a method that requires torrenting a file, it's HIGHLY RECOMMENDED to have a VPN enabled!

What's a "torrent"?

Please note that YOU and ONLY YOU are responsible for any complaints you get from your ISP for torrenting or otherwise. Be safe!

Which Minecraft: Story Mode is which?

Minecraft: Story Mode (also referred to as “Season One”) is the original game developed by Telltale Games, announced at Minecon 2015 and officially released on October 13, 2015. This is probably the version you remember. On completion, Telltale had released 8 total episodes, which had to be bought individually or entitled to you in a physical copy.

You may also remember the version on Netflix, which only released with episodes 1-5 from Season One. It had remastered lighting, higher quality voice lines, and was generally just a polished up more movie-like version of the game. (See: Netflix/YouTube)

Minecraft: Story Mode Season Two was the sequel game released on July 11th, 2017. It’s less known than Season One, having much less hype and advertising (fun fact, most people who remember Story Mode don’t even know Season Two exists!) On completion, Season Two had a total of 5 episodes, the usual amount for a Telltale game. Season Two is usually more rare than it’s predecessor, due to being more obscure and not having a very long lifespan. This can most times make getting a disc or key extremely hard and/or expensive.

All releases of Season One and Season Two were taken off shelves on July 25th, 2019. The Netflix version survived and remained playable a little while longer, but was also killed on December 5th, 2022.

The different discs and which one you should buy

Season One

Season Pass disc : A normal disc that just says “Minecraft: Story Mode” contains the first 5 episodes of Season 1. These episodes are not on the disc apart from Episode 1. So, if you’re purchasing for a console with no support for redownloading Telltale's episodes, (currently only Xbox 360), you won’t be able to play the other episodes.

Complete Adventure disc : “The Complete Adventure” disc/cartridge contains all the episodes for Season 1. This version contains all of the Episodes on disc, so buying for Xbox 360 will grant you all the Season 1 episodes.

For digital copies (Steam), Season One was released as the base game (episodes 1-5), and the separate Adventure Pass DLC (episodes 6-8). This means that if you’re buying a Steam key or download code for any other console, you’ll want to get both the base game AND the Adventure Pass if you wish to play all episodes.

Season Two

Season Two only has one type of disc. A “Minecraft Story Mode Season Two” disc/cartridge is the entire second season of the game. The episodes need to be downloaded (with the exception of Nintendo Switch and the Japanese release on PS4), so again, if you’re on a console with no support for Telltale's episodes (Xbox 360) you can only play episode one unless you modify your console. Season Two was never released on PS3, Wii U, or Apple TV.

Rarity and average price

PC digital storefronts (Steam, GOG) - Keys for digital versions are often sold out, are very shady to obtain and are outrageously expensive. The average price of a Steam key as of writing is ~$250, and that’s just for the base game (episodes 1-5). To obtain Adventure Pass (episodes 6-8), you’re probably dropping around another $100. That’s on average around $350 for Season One alone. If you also want Season Two, you’re looking at around another ~$200.

PC discs - Usually a handful of copies floating around on eBay. Prices vary wildly from $40 to $100. Episodes are not downloadable.

Xbox One/Series X|S discs - Common on various online marketplaces. Prices vary from $20 for Season Pass to $70 for Complete Adventure. Episodes entitled to your disc are downloadable.

Xbox 360 discs - Available on various online marketplaces. Prices vary from $15 to $40. Episodes are not downloadable.

PlayStation 4 discs - Available on various online marketplaces. Prices vary from $25 to $90 (please don't sell for that price). Episodes entitled to your disc are downloadable. (Japanese S2 copy has episodes on-disc.)

PlayStation 3 discs - Available on various online marketplaces. Prices vary from $15 to $45. Episodes entitled to your disc are downloadable.

Nintendo Switch cartridges - Available on various online marketplaces. Prices are high, usually $90 for Season One and $150+ for Season Two. Episodes do not need to be downloaded, as they're included on-cartridge.

Wii U discs - Usually a handful of copies floating around on eBay. Prices vary from $25 to $45. Episodes are included on-disc.

iOS/MacOS - Not at all offered on Apple's App Store redownloading or purchase history. Episodes are also no longer downloadable. Season One was never updated to support 64-bit MacOS (Catalina 10.15 and later), so it will not boot on newer firmwares.

Android/Google Play Store - Not directly offered on the Google Play Store, however some have reported redownloading via purchase history is possible. Episodes are no longer downloadable.

Apple TV - Quite literally lost media. Not at all offered on Apple's App Store redownloading or purchase history. Episodes are also no longer downloadable. Never updated to support 64-bit TVOS (11.0 and later), so it will not boot on newer TVs.

Netflix - Not directly offered on Netflix, being delisted on December 5th 2023. Still playable via the Minecraft Story Mode Netflix Archive YouTube channel, or Eveep23's Netflix Interactive Player.

10 = Perfectly playable with little to no issues

1 = Almost unplayable or very unpleasant to play

Graphics are adjustable, mods are supported, and the frame rate is the most stable. This obviously varies per device, and weaker/older devices can lag significantly. If you have a computer made in the last ten years you'll probably be fine.

Just the Switch version at a locked frame rate. With handheld boost mode, you can achieve 1080p 60fps on S1 and 30fps on S2.

Also a solid version with uncompressed texture quality and high quality audio. FPS can suffer is demanding sections, though.

Mobile versions aren't ranked due to constant changes/software updates and differing models of phones. Minecraft: Story Mode no longer gets updates to keep up with modern mobile devices (obviously), so just note that older phones are usually better for running the game due to newer software updates breaking things or causing crashes.
